Bible Camp Work: Soldotna, Alaska

Currently two couples with association with Canaan Church are serving at Solid Rock Bible Camp.  Canaan Church joyfully participates in these ministries not just because these young people grew up at the church, but because their work is consistent with and an extension of the ministry of the church to reach people with the saving gospel of Jesus Christ.

Ben and Bethany Fisher are establishing a wilderness camping program for the Solid Rock Bible Camp near Soldotna, Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula.

Ben and Bethany Fisher have had a long history of working at Solid Rock Bible Camp. In May 2009, they returned to SRBC in order to fill the position of Wilderness Program Directors.

Both Ben and Bethany have the desire to reach the lost for the Lord, using the wilderness as a tool. By taking people away from their “comfortable luxuries” of cell phones, internet, i-pods, warm houses, and “fresh out of the oven” food, and putting them into the challenging environment of the “great out doors”, people are stretched to limits they didn’t realize they could reach. It is during this stretching period that people open their eyes and see the splendor of God’s creation around them and enjoy the peace and serenity the wilderness offers. How can you stand on the top of a mountain, overlooking the seemingly endless Alaskan mountains and glacier carved valleys and not see the Creator’s handiwork?

Bethany also hosts retreats and often has opportunity to teach the bible and share the gospel with campers and staff alike during chapel at the camps.  (At 2010 snow camp Bethany shared God's word with more than 100 campers.)

South-central Alaska has provided one of the most amazing landscapes that a wilderness program could ask for. The Fishers have chosen to use it to teach people of all ages about the Lord. There are many opportunities for churches, individuals, families to be involved with this great adventure. Whether it’s assisting with building projects, working as summer staff, sending a camper, or participating in supporting the Fishers, it’s all for His Kingdom. Please contact us if you would like more information! Thank You!

Bethany is the daughter of Jeff and Mary Mullins (Owners of Creation Woods).

Nathaniel and Echo McGilvra- started serving at Solid Rock Bible Camp in May of 2008, helping to spread the gospel message to the youth of Alaska.

Nathaniel works mainly with the Wagon Train Program teaching horsemanship classes and Echo helps out in the office and in other areas. The horsemanship classes are a big draw for kids and for parents who would not normally send their child to a Bible camp. During this time he gets a unique opportunity and method of sharing the Gospel with the children. The children come to learn about horses and leave at least with the basic knowledge of Jesus Christ. In the evening after all the classes are over he can go over to Wagon Train and spend more individual time with the children. During the winter he helps maintain the barn and taking care of the horses. Along with his responsibilities at the barn he helps out with our rental groups that we have during the winter. This includes helping to run activities such as the tubing hill, cleaning, and doing dishes. We are continuing to serve as short-term staff with the goal of raising enough support to become full-time staff.
